Waldemar Matera

comes from Bytom in Upper Silesia. He began playing the French horn at the Fr. Chopin State Music School in Bytom in 1994 under the direction of Mieczysław Korcz. In 1995-1996 he studied in the French horn class of MA Henryk Frankowski. He graduated from the Secondary Music School in his home town in 2001 in the classes of French horn of MA Adrian Ticman and chamber music of MA Paweł Waloszczyk. In the same year he took up music studies at the K. Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice, where he studied in the French horn class of Prof. Wiesław Grochowski and the chamber music class of Prof. Jan Górny and Dr. Damian Walentek. He completed his studies in 2006, defending his master’s thesis entitled Artistic activity of the horn players of Katowice symphonic ensembles after 1945 (supervisor: Prof. W. Grochowski). In 2017 he was awarded a Doctor of Musical Arts degree, defending his thesis entitled The compositional output of Franz and Richard Strauss in the context of the development of the virtuoso capabilities of the valve horn (supervisor: D. Walentek, Ph.D.). He has also honed his skills during courses and master classes with eminent horn pedagogues such as: Dale Clevenger, Stefan de Leval Jezierski, Xiao-Ming Han, Radovan Vlatković, Michael Hӧlzel. Horn player in the H. M. Górecki Silesian Philharmonic in Katowice since 2003, where he has been deputy first horn player since 2010. In 2001-2009 collaborated with the Silesian Opera in Bytom. Soloist and leader of the French horn section of the Beethoven Academy Orchestra. As 1st horn player he performs with many symphonic ensembles from all over the country (Sinfonietta Cracovia, Silesian Chamber Orchestra and others). Since 2018 he has also collaborated with the German Würth Philharmoniker, where he has had the opportunity to work with leading conductors (Paavo Järvi, Leonard Slatkin, Claudio Vandell, Christian Thielemann.) and soloists of world rank (Maxim Vengerov, Anna Netrebko, Truls Mørk and others). Member of the Silesian Horn Quartet, the Quint-esencja wind quintet and the brass quintet of the Silesian Philharmonic. He has taken part in the recording of nearly 40 CDs, film music and archive recordings. Since 2006 he has been running the French horn class at the St. Moniuszko State Music School Complex in Bielsko-Biała. His students and graduates achieve significant successes of national and international rank. Since 2020, he has also been working as a pedagogue with the K. Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice, where he has been employed as an assistant since 2021. He practices on an instrument and mouthpiece made by Engelbert Schmid.
