Born in Japan, received her first piano lessons at the age of four. She studied at the Tokyo University of Arts at Haruko Kasama, studied at Halina Czerny-Stefańska and Susumu Aoyagi. Since 2002, she has lived in Berlin, continued her studies with Klaus Hellwig at the Berlin University of the Arts. Akiko Nikami has won numerous international competitions including 2nd Prize at the Takahiro Sonoda Prize Piano Competition in Oita (Japan), 3rd Prize at the International Competition in Porto (Portugal) and 2nd Prize at the International Robert Schumann Competition in Zwickau.
Besides the concerts as a soloist, she devotes herself with great love to the chamber music. She has an extensive repertoire, mainly of compositions for wind instruments. Since October 2009, she has been working as a pianist at the UdK Berlin, currently with the horn class of Christian-Friedrich Dallmann. Since September 2014 she has also been working as a pianist for the academics in the Staatskapelle Berlin. She participated as an official companion at the German Music Competition as well as the Schuncke Hornwettbewerb Baden-Baden.
